Fathers Day Novel Gifts The history of Fathers Day as seen today is not even a hundred years old. Ms Sonora Louise Smart Dodd of Spokane,Washington is credited with pushing for the special day in the US. She was not satisfied with just Mothers Day to honor mothers. However, some scholars argue that Fathers Day history is much older than we actually believe it to be. They say that the custom of honoring dad’s on a special day could be over 4,000 years old.
Babylon Beginnings of Fathers Day These Scholars claim that the tradition of Father’s Day can be traced in the ruins of Babylon. They have recorded that a young boy called Elmesu carved a Father’s Day message on a card made out of clay nearly 4,000 years ago. Elmesu wished his Babylonian father good health and a long life.
- St. Joseph’s Feast Day had long been celebrated as Fathers Day from the Medieval Times. In countries where Catholic Church holds greater influence Fathers Day is celebrated on St. Joseph’s Day (March 19).
- Ms Dodd Raised by her Father Sonora Smart Dodd felt if there is a day to honor mother then why not for father? She felt strongly for fathers because of the affection she received from her own father Mr William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran. Her mother died while childbirth when she was just 16. Mr Smart raised the newborn and five other children in a loving fashion.
- The First Fathers Day The Spokane Ministerial Association and the local Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) supported Sonora’s cause. Spokane celebrated its first Fathers Day on June 19, 1910. Though there was initial hesitation the idea gained gradual popularity all over US, and Fathers Day came to be celebrated in cities across the country.
- Presidents Support National Fathers Day With heightened popularity of Father’s Day across the country, President Woodrow Wilson approved of this idea in 1916. President Calvin Coolidge too supported the idea of a national Father’s Day in 1924 to, “establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations”.

I really enjoyed the first two books of Curt’s trilogy on the Civil War,,,or as my Tennessee brother-in-law says, “the war of Northern Aggression”.
Having lived in Fayetteville, Arkansas during my 5 years of college I particularly enjoyed all the action that happened there and in the area in Curt’s second book. I could relate so well to the characters in Curt’s portrayal of the different folks he brought to life with his wonderful writing.
I can not wait to read book three of the Trilogy. …I may have to go back some in “Splintered” …which I will not mind at all!
Read them all folks…is my best advice.
